Sinus Surgery Q & A
When do I need sinus surgery?
When your acute or recurrent sinusitis doesn’t respond to conservative treatments, Dr. Yeung may recommend permanent relief through sinus surgery. The two most effective procedures are balloon sinuplasty and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).
What happens during balloon sinuplasty?
Balloon sinuplasty is an FDA-approved nonsurgical procedure that Dr. Yeung performs at Houston Sinus Surgery with either local or general anesthesia. The procedure is similar to angioplasty, in which tiny balloons open up clogged veins.
While you relax or sleep, Dr. Yeung inserts a balloon catheter through your nostril into the inflamed sinus. Once the balloon is in position, Dr. Yeung gently inflates it. The pressure re-opens the blocked sinus so it can drain normally again and begin to restructure itself.
Dr. Yeung then irrigates the area with saline solution to remove trapped pus and mucus. After the sinus is open and clean, Dr. Yeung deflates and removes the balloon catheter. You’re back to your normal activities in just a day or two.
What are the advantages of balloon sinuplasty?
Dr. Yeung’s balloon sinuplasty has many benefits, including:
- No surgery or incisions
- You can breathe normally immediately afterward
- Quick recovery
- Reduces or eliminates need for other therapies
- Can be used with other therapies, if needed
What happens during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)?
In addition to resolving sinusitis, FESS fixes structural abnormalities in the nose. Dr. Yeung recommends FESS when he thinks your sinusitis is caused by excess tissue or bone that’s clogging your sinuses.
Dr. Yeung performs FESS at Houston Sinus Surgery on an outpatient basis and may recommend either local or general anesthesia. He inserts a tiny tube attached to a camera into your nostril so that he can guide very small and precise surgical instruments to remove excess tissue and bone.
During FESS, he may also remove benign nasal polyps (polypectomy) or reduce enlarged obstructive turbinates, the structures that clean and humidify the nasal air.
What are the advantages of FESS?
FESS is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional nasal surgery and has a number of advantages, including:
- Smaller incisions
- Long-lasting effectiveness
- Less bleeding
- Less tissue removed
- Shorter recovery time
- No external scarring
- Low risk of complications
Dr. Yeung chooses either FESS or balloon sinuplasty based on your unique case and needs. Call at his staff directly for an in-depth consultation or book an appointment online.
